Forest fires are a global issue that raises serious concerns for the environment and the survival of living things. The various causes of forest fires in the world can be divided into two main categories: natural and anthropogenic (human activities). Natural causes, such as lightning and extreme heat, often play a role in starting fires. However, human activities such as deforestation, agriculture and land burning are the main factors that increase the frequency and intensity of forest fires. The impact of forest fires on the environment is very significant. First, forest fires cause biodiversity loss. The natural habitat for many species, both flora and fauna, was badly damaged by the fires. Endangered species are finding it increasingly difficult to survive as they lose shelter and food sources. Apart from that, forest fires also trigger wider ecosystem damage, affecting the ecological balance in the area. Second, forest fires contribute to global climate change. When trees burn, carbon dioxide (CO2) stored in the biomass is released into the atmosphere. This increases the concentration of greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming. According to research, forest fires contribute up to 20% of global CO2 emissions every year. Apart from that, the smoke produced also contains dangerous particles which can cause health problems for humans and animals. Third, forest fires function as a cause of soil erosion and water pollution. Without vegetation cover, the soil becomes vulnerable to erosion by wind and rain, which can cause landslides. Water quality is also disrupted when dissolved material from burned soil flows into rivers and lakes, negatively impacting the quality of aquatic ecosystems. Fourth, forest fires can affect local communities, especially those who depend on forests for daily life. Communities living near forests often lose their livelihoods, both in the agricultural and fishing sectors, due to environmental damage. This can lead to population migration and increase social tensions due to competition for dwindling resources. Overcoming forest fires requires an integrated approach, including sustainable forest management, increasing public awareness, and strict law enforcement against illegal burning practices. Rehabilitation programs for burned areas are also important to accelerate the ecosystem recovery process. Environmental experts continue to explore innovative solutions such as monitoring technology to detect fires early and the development of fire-resistant plant species. Therefore, it is important for us to jointly make conservation efforts and maintain ecosystem balance so that forest fires can be minimized, and their impact on the environment and society can be reduced. This effort is not only the responsibility of the government, but also every individual and community to preserve the environment and biodiversity that we have.
