The UK Parliament works on behalf of citizens to check and challenge the work of Government, make effective laws, debate important issues and decide what should be done. This week, the Chancellor and Defence Secretary face questions in the Commons and the Assisted Dying Bill passes its second reading in the Lords. Peers examine bills on renters’ rights, bus services and pensions and debate a Statutory Instrument allowing earlier prisoner deportations. Lisa Nandy appears before the Culture Committee and Lord Hermer is a witness in front of the Constitution Committee, while backbench MPs lead debates on giving every child the best start in life, global plastics and end of life care.
There is a special session of the Procedure Committee to consider evidence on how we can better support new MPs to perform their core functions of scrutinising and making law on behalf of their constituents. The report will include a recommendation that we develop a programme to provide new MPs with practical and procedural advice, support and resources. The report will be published next month.
